The village was named after LTCDR William Sanders, the only New Zealander to win a Victoria Cross in a naval action. While born in Kingsland in Auckland, he moved with his family to Takapuna in the late 1890's. He travelled to the UK to join the Royal Navy Reserve during WW1 He was awarded the VC as CO of a Q Ship for engaging a U-boat and under intense fire from the submarine incapacitating it at great personal risk to himself and his crew.
